And so to appropriation and recontextualization, once an area of interest has been identified we can use a variety of materials to respond to and create a body of work. This took a lot of thought (on my part anyway). At first I wanted to do landscape took some photographs and tried some work with an idea of Kiefer's work in mind.
Photo taken old Dublin road
Painted with card, just picked out the colours and got rid of the photoand did my own impression of it
To do landscape properly one should be out in the open, this was going to be a problem for me as regards location , transport, preparation weather and time so I will try this during the summer holidays.
Back to my photos
This was a blown up vertion of some cardboard honeycomb (a latex piece which I had already done)
This responce was done with black grey and white acrylic paint and worked with a tooth pick to give it the feathery edge
Photo of sceene photocopied with cling film over it
My response to the photo done with masking tape and painted over with acrylic
THE PHOTO BELOW IS THE ONE I WANT TO INVESTIGATE FURTHER
After much trial and error finally decided to go with this photo, it was a photo of a gipsy girl's eye blown up and then photocopied with a mesh over it
This was one response done with acrylic paint mesh and black ink
Interesting when many vertions of the photos were put together, looks like a wolf!
Acrylic painting on canvas inspired by the many layers I could obscure a picture with
After pulling the mesh through the photocopier these patterns emerged giving me the idea to try something in paint
The above work was done on lino floor tiles with a background of gloss and other household paints drizzled and worked with a tooth pick
Acrylic on metal plates (wet on wet)
Acrylic on metal done with paint scraper
Something nice and slick about applying acrylic paint to metal, not at all like any other surface but it does take a while to dry
Acrylic done with sponge and card
First life painting (I think) tones only
More life Painting
Some quick sketches (like doing quick ones as they are much freer)
Photo before and after painting over (Richter inspired)
This was my final piece which I did not think would be a sucess at all but I was happiest with. Stapled some very light cream cloth onto a frame painted it over with white emulsion. Painted on another piece of thicker material with a more textured finish not knowing whether it would adhere properly to the surface background, it did but it partly obscured the surface texture/stitches so I added another smaller but less suttle piece of cloth. I liked the finished layered result and the fact that I had not painted all the way to the edge of the painting or the painting may have vanished into the white wall.
